Operation Smile
The Postcode Foundation supports Operation Smile in their work to help children in poor countries born with face deformities like a cleft lip or palate.
The Foundation is the main contributor to Operation Smile Sweden and supported a Swedish medical team to go to Ethiopia and operate 95 children over a period of two weeks. The Foundation also supported the start up of the organization in Sweden. Children born with face deformities in poor countries often experience a life with severe physical and social complications. They often have problems eating and become malnourished as a consequence. Additionally, the social consequences are often harsh and many children are being hidden by their families, and thus denied the opportunity to go to school, to obtain job and a family. By as little as a 45-minute surgery the face deformity can be eliminated and the future of the child is changed forever. The idea of Operation Smile is that no child in the world should live in humiliation and isolation due to an easily treated face deformity.
