Tostan
The Postcode Foundation supports the organization Tostan in their work to reduce female circumcision, an ancient tradition practiced around the world.
This very old tradition is practiced around the world, foremost in the northern parts of Africa. Female circumcision or female genital cutting (FGC) means serious suffering for the young girls and women that are subject to the tradition. In worst cases the consequences leads to the girl’s death. The Foundation supports Tostan´s work in northern Gambia where up to 99 percent of all girls are being cut. Tostan is one of very few organizations to show concrete, positive results in the work to reduce female circumcision. Hence, this project contributes to decrease the practice of FGC, and so to reduce the severe suffering of many girls in the Gambia.
