Swedish innovation improves health in Uganda

The Swedish innovation Solvatten (solar water) cleans water with sunlight. Used by the organization Amref, in a project in Uganda, a total of 8.000 families will benefit from health and environmental improvements.

Many Ugandans suffer from insufficient access to clean water. A widespread lack of knowledge of health improvements further worsens the problem. Amref educates about health and distribute Solvatten. Solvatten is a water container that purifies water with the help of UV rays. When put in sunlight for a few hours, the water gets heated to 70 degrees C (158 F) and no microorganisms survive.

Solvatten is used to clean and heat water
At the moment, most people in the Ugandan countryside heat their cooking water with firewood or paraffin. An environmentally hazardous and costly method. As a part of the project, funded by the Swedish Postcode Foundation, Amref will distribute 1.800 Solvatten containers. Furthermore, they will educate 28 local health workers. In 10 schools the organization educates teachers and start up health clubs. The schools will also get rainwater containers and washing facilities installed as a part of the project.
