Comprehensive cleaning of Mount Everest
Via the organization Eco Himal, the Postcode Foundation supports the project Clean Up Everest, where an effective and sustainable recycling system shall be built in conjunction with eight tons of garbage to be taken down from Mount Everest.
Nepal is one of the world's poorest countries and tourism is the country's main source of income. Each year, there are an increasing number of tourists who want to climb the world's highest mountain - Mount Everest, or trek the eight-day route up to Base Camp. Tourism brings not only income to the country’s inhabitants but also a big environmental problem: garbage.
This project provides a comprehensive cleaning of Mount Everest in combination with the installation of a functioning and sustainable infrastructure for recycling. The recycling system also means income-generating activities for local people. The project Clean Up Everest is originally a local initiative that creates jobs and preserves the Himalayan sensitive ecosystems.
